Hello, I read your posting on my Ipad in an app called Zite which is a personalized magazine. Your posting was in the religion and spirituality section. Hello.

I was not sure how to respond to your post about the age of cynicism. I was an evangelical christian in highschool and after reflection left that group. These days I am a buddhist and have a radically different experience of our current age. I see the resurgence of evangelical christians whom seem so sure that they have God's rulebook and judge others to be a much more driving force then the cynic. They often seem to be more pharisees then followers of Jesus. As to the root of morality it is part of democracy that we each contribute our vote on that matter. I don't see how the bold cynic is the true American Idol. People do seem to enjoy vicarious judgement of others. Perhaps you can elaborate on what you meant. Most of the critics I see are not cynical but full of anger. Perhaps you are speaking of some hidden group of media moguls who look for ratings and profit rather then content. I am not sure.

In any case I found your post and thought you approachable. The best to you and yours.

As with most of your posts, it gives me an opportunity to look up some words that I am unsure of. Cynicism was the word that I learned about today. There is a very interesting article on wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cynicism). The actual meaning of the word surprised me a bit. I think I was confusing it with critical or skeptical. Cynicism is a distrust of the motivation of others. You are right that we need to avoid that. We cannot know the actual motivation of anyone else. We can only know their actions. A common place I see this is in traffic. It is easy to think that the other driver is against you. This can cause bad feelings. The best thing to do in traffic and in life is to make your decisions based on what is happening, or what peoples actions are than to see some inner negative motivation of theirs. If you are going to imagine a motivation, then try to imagine the best motivation they could have. You will feel better and make better decisions because of it. If you are not busy imagining or guessing others motivations, then you have nothing to gossip about. You can only relate your direct observation. Everything else is only a guess, and might be wrong. This is one of the more abstract applications of do unto others. I would want someone else to imagine the best reason or motivation for my action, not the worst, so I do that for them. I imagine the best motivation or none at all.
